I learned to play drums to this guy's music at a very young age. It did a world of good.

Videos like this classic from '64 only reinforce the idea that most great talents and players were around way before the modern cable TV and digital age. Guys like Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff were true organ pioneers, and anyone who tries to emulate should recognize and be indebted to them. Fantastic scales/ modes and blues keyboarding

Quentin used to play a hollow body on Jimmy's 1960-63 sessions. I think he was Butch Warren's cousin. He was a solid comper, gave Jimmy exactly what he needed, but as far as JOS' regular trio guitarists go, Eddie McFadden is my favorite. Such a great tone, he had great ideas too, i.e. his solo on "Indiana".

A truly great video! Great from start to finish and everyone swings, but I still would like to point out two extra outstanding parts: 1) The passage Jimmy plays between 2 min 54 sec and 3 min 13 sec. Flowing creativity and total control not bothered by the pressure of very high speed. True virtuosity! 2) The long masterly played right hand pedal tone solo (the thumb firmly planted at the F all the time) starting at 4 min 28 sec all the way to 6 min 55 sec. Thanks for sharing!

A true master - He took things to a whole new level.

This is pretty cool. It's so weird to see someone playing jazz guitar on a Strat. Back then, EVERYBODY played those big hollowbody guitars, either a Gibson, Epiphone or a D'Angelico, usually. I bet Quentin got teased a lot for playing such an instrument, the same way the early jazz bass guitarists caught a lot of grief from people who thought they should be playing a REAL bass (ie upright).
