"Die Watch am Rhein" was not the German anthem, and was composed 100 years before the Nazis. Yet it was one of the strongest nationalist German songs, stirring the memoir of the many French invasions of Germany. In "Mein Kampf", Hitler recalls that, in late 1914, the train which brought him with 500 other young recruits to the western front suddenly burst with "Die Watch am Rhein".

Bogart's strong confident? I read it as Rick being a troublemaker. He wanted Vic to get in trouble with the Germans, so he can win back Ilsa. That's why we strongly nodded. It was like it's your funeral, go right a head.

There's a rumor that since the script was being written on a day to day basis, Bogart had no idea *what* he was nodding at.

Good point there, RubyTuesday! I didn't realize that Sam's not present in the room during this scene. I also agree that Bogart's nod is really memorable! I think he added coolness to the nod.

Am I the only one scanning the room, looking for Sam? God, I love this scene, and there's something in Bogart's strong, confident nod to the band that just sticks with me.

AMERICA SHOULD REMEMBER "THE MISERABLE ONES" right about now!

Yes, but the real anthem was restricted since it was still war and Wacht Am Rhein IS one of the Nazi anthem.
