In case you didn't know, Mr. Big had two different guitar players in their roster; first was super-shredder Paul Gilbert (formerly of Racer X). Paul left Mr. big in 1999 and was later on replaced by former Poison axeman, Richie Kotzen. Both guitarists are monster players, but their techniques are very different from each other. Guitar geeks, notice how Richie plays the intro to Mr. Big's classic, GREEN-TINTED SIXTIES MIND. Taken from a Japan TV performance...

like many MR BIG HITS. And He wrote all this song (music and lyrics). Thats why I think Richie its kind of BORED comparing his performance on MR BIG songs that he wrote (Shine, Static). But I have to admit Richie never talks about his passage with MR BIG (only Poison is mentioned about his band career to the press and tv) and the reason could be that he knows MR BIG most famous guitarrist is Paul Gilbert.

It will be an unfinished discussion if you guys are trying to compare both PG and RK as musicians: RK its a feeling guitarrist, also has technique and versatility to play and write fusion (like on that album with Greg Howe), jazz, blues/soul and rock songs, besides his talent as singer (better than many vocalists). PG has a frighting technique (he almost never miss a note), also has a good feeling (try to listen he playing that live album with Hendrix songs) and a good talent for write songs

how the hell can you say refusing to use a technique makes him a better guitarrist?

You should see the whole video and listen to Billy talking about Richie and Paul instead of trying to figure it out yourself. It's something like : both are great and different. BTW: Billy and Kotzen have done several recordings and live performances after Mr.Big era. BTW2: Kotzen and Eric too :-D

PG is the best guitar player on the world, but Kotzen is great too. Billy isn't bored, but I think that he prefer play with Paul...

I think Billy is missing PG in this video, he looks extremely bored whilst play, almost as if he doesn't want to be there. Him and PG always looked like they were having fun playing together, even if Billy didn't get on with Eric so much. Richie just seems to stand there and play guitar, and do nothing else, PG felt the music and loved to play with his band

This introduction is harder than the original... Try to play along with him and you 'll realize how difficult it is. Richie is one level forward Paul... Richie said that will avoid tapping in any music... so he figured out how to play in another way... Paul play the same fuckin' stuff all the time without felling (sorry)... but I admire him as a good guitar player...

I know Richie is good. I was listening to him in his Shrapnel days when he was a teen. I was also trying to get the others to stop comparing. Preach at them, not me. : )
